Swirl Society : Making News & Going Places !!

I was thrilled to see the dating site, Swirl Society, exclusively for Black women and White men making news on a *gasp* "Black news" site.  Times are a changing !

Los Angeles, CA (BlackNews.com) - Interracial relationships are viewed as a positive step towards smoother race relations by some; as "sellout" behavior and a denial of racial heritage by others. Interracial marriages more than doubled between 1980 and 1995. Black/White marriages increased an estimated 96% overall, with marriages between of Black women and White men increasing 171%.
Swirl Society was formed specifically for Black women and White men. Too many times other sites offering similar aspects over time become spammed, cluttered and to be honest far too expensive and no longer have a singular purpose. According to Shon Anthony of Los Angeles, "Swirl was formed out of an idea to find happiness for Black women and White men looking for the same thing."

In todays society, online dating has become as integral part of North American culture as the Internet itself. However, as the modern equivalent of traditional dating services, (internet) dating has had to overcome the stigma of "lonely hearts" and other negative images. Though interracial dating sites are not the only way to meet singles of other ethnic groups, they have certain advantages. There in lies one of biggest advantages of using a specialty interracial dating site: you can browse hundreds of personal ads of people with the same interest, which is to date someone outside their own race.
Swirl Society is a site where White men and Black women can feel free and safe to email, talk to and date. Its a colorful world out there, so why limit yourself.
Miss Anthony's short term goal is to inform "Black American women to know there is a place out there to meet nice decent men from here in America as well as other parts of the world that are interested in them." Swirl Society is a place to chat, post on forums, write their own blogs, create events and express themselves through the profile page features and a lot of other features.
Anthony wants everyone to tell a friend and pass the website on. According to Shon Anthony, "I want Swirl Society to become a credible trusted site without interruptions, confrontations or negativity, its all about finding your true love."    Source

Is a Match Maker Right For You ? Rabbi Shumley Offers Some Advice

I'm posting this article from Rabbi Shumley because it really speaks to me as a single woman who really doesn't like internet dating and is rather shy.

Should I Call in a Pro?
Five reasons professional matchmakers can take the
awkwardness out of dating and put you on the fast track to your soul mate.

Dear Rabbi Shmuley,
I'm 32 years old, and I'm really
ready to have a serious relationship and move forward in my life. I'm doing
online dating, but I'm also considering trying a professional matchmaker. I know
that there are Jewish matchmakers, and secular ones like I see on TV, but I'm
Catholic--do you think this is a viable option for someone like me? Is it worth
the time and money, or should I just be pumping up my social life on my own?
--Make Me a Match

Dear Make Me,
A matchmaker is a great idea,
and not just for religious people. If you're Catholic, yes, you might want to go
to a Catholic matchmaker, especially since I believe strongly that being on the
same page religiously and value-wise is critical to the success of a long-term
union. But first you have to overcome your reluctance to go to a matchmaker,
which most people see as being for those who are desperate. That's simply not
true.

I often encourage men and women to use their contacts to alleviate
the loneliness of single life and, ultimately, get hitched. A matchmaker is a
great idea for the following reasons:

1. Because modern life is so
competitive, and human worth today is largely dictated by what we do rather than
what we are, people are shyer and more insecure than ever. The endless models of
perfection that enter our homes through television have undermined the
self-confidence of most women. Hence, without matchmakers, only people with
overt virtues, like beauty, wealth, or charisma, get noticed. A skilled
matchmaker restores a sense of balance to the dating scene by allowing people
with more subtle virtues to be noticed as well.

2. Matchmaking lessens
the pain of rejection. When a guy and a girl go out after having met at
Starbucks, it can be very awkward if either doesn't want to continue on to a
second date. It can break a guy or girl's heart to hear that the person in whom
they are interested does not reciprocate their affections. A good matchmaker
uses his or her kindness and tact to soften the blow when a match isn't magic.

3. A matchmaker does your advertising for you. So often on a date, a man
and a woman feel awkward. They want to convey how special they are but without
sounding arrogant or full of themselves. Because a matchmaker gets all that
"advertising" out of the way beforehand, you have the freedom to just be
yourself on the date.

4. A matchmaker is out looking on your behalf when
you don't have all the time in the world to do so, and they're also looking in
the right places rather than at some stupid bar or nightclub.

5. A
matchmaker remains an objective adviser throughout the courting and dating
process. So often these days we just don't have a wise person to help us
navigate the vicissitudes of relationships, especially as we become more
emotionally entangled and our judgment becomes more subjective. A wise and
insightful matchmaker – as opposed to those who are just out to make a buck –
does just that.

At the very least, if a professional matchmaker isn't
for you, go and tell all of your friends that you want a relationship, and ask
them if there is anyone to whom they can introduce you. We're all a bit shy. But
while we don't have to have the kind of confidence that allows us to go up to
any man or woman on the street and introduce ourselves, we do have to have at
least enough confidence to tell our friends that we are looking. Don't be afraid
to lean on friends. Don’t even be too shy to tell your parents that you want to
get married. They can be of great assistance. And yes, I know you think I'm
crazy, but I did say your parents.

Seriously, I can understand your
reluctance to turn to a matchmaker. But do not let your shyness keep you from
dating. It doesn't need to. Your friends recognize the special and wonderful
characteristics in you. Trust that they will know other people who will
recognize this as well, and trust enough to then risk vulnerability with them.
After all, that is the only way to open your heart–through trust.

G-d
bless you.
Shmuley

Ageism & Internet Dating ?

Several ladies in a previous post have stated that they are running into "cyber ageism" on Internet dating sites. As a result, I went out and did a little research on several dating sites and I have to say there are a lot of men out there in the 40+ age group looking for much younger women. There is nothing scientific about what I did, so I certainly couldn't relate my research to the general population of single men over 40.

I have to ask, isn't this just male privilege ? Men have always had the privilege to play the field until they are in their 40s and then decide they want to get married and have a family. Men with that mind-set know they can find a woman 10-15 years younger than themselves to marry and start a family with. However, women have never had that privilege because we know that our typical child-bearing years are not endless. It is my own OPINION that a lot of these men on dating sites are not looking to "start a family"--to me, it's code-speak for "I want hot arm candy."

When I reviewed some of the dating profiles, a lot of these over 40 guys looking for women 25-35 were already divorced with children. So, they will have to try again on that "start a family line"..lol. If these guys were really honest I think they would say they want younger women because they have the perception that women their own age have "let themselves go" or are "not as spontaneous" as younger women.

Personally I feel like this about age: Age Ain't Nothing but a Number

I realize my "feel good moment" above is not an answer to how women can combat the problem of ageism in dating, but I think you have to live your life un-apologetically as you are NOW and any QUALITY man will be more interested in getting to know you as a person vs. how old you are. Personally, I don't think Internet dating alone is the way-to-go for women of any age if the goal is marriage and children. I would keep Internet dating open, but also try other avenues such as community events, professional clubs / associations, volunteering, etc.

Now, if you just want to play the field and date, younger men are always an option. Check this article for more details....but consider the source...lol.

Let's discuss.

Adventures In Internet Dating

Let me just say, I lobster-loathe dating...lol. The process of dating always seems so fake to me. I like just meeting someone and getting to know them in a non-romantic setting and becoming friends. Eventually, if the chemistry is right, the friendship turns into dating. But, really, who has that kind of time now.

At any rate, internet dating so far makes me feeling like this :

Yep, internet dating makes the Pinkerton feel a little un-pretty. I suppose it doesn't help that I'm recovering from a bad cold and all my profile pics look horrid..lol.

I use to think my friend that married a guy she met on EHarmony after knowing him for 3 months was crazy and now I realize she was just tired of dating..lol.

Trying to avoid these type individuals has been challenging:

Oh yes, internet dating is an adventure. However, this is my year to confront all the things I said I would 'never' do or things I have been afraid to do. Internet dating ...check. Tomorrow is another day...it will get better.
